In the Épéron district of Réunion, the town council has embarked on a vast programme to reduce substandard housing. My childhood home is in danger of being demolished. It had been granted to my grandparents by their employer, the director of the Boubon sugar mills, an industry that is a vestige of our island's colonial past.
